Story by De Maiya Walton Leah Hernandez isn’t just a senior at Hanover Central High School—she’s an athlete with big dreams for the future. After graduation, Leah plans to attend Indiana University, where she will pursue her passion for healthcare by studying to become an X-ray technician. Her interest in this career path sparked back in middle school, and it has been driving her ever since. Leah’s journey as an athlete began with cross country, a sport she does well in despite not initially wanting to be a distance runner. “I never really wanted to run long distances,” she admits, “but that’s what I ended up being good at.” For the past seven years, she has dedicated herself to running, but after this final year, she’s ready to hang up her spikes and embrace some well-deserved rest and relaxation. While Leah doesn’t plan to continue her competitive running career after high school, staying active will always be part of her life. Outside of school and running, she enjoys spending time with her friends, soaking up the sunshine, and working at the La Dilla drive-thru. Leah credits her supportive parents and close-knit group of friends for much of her success. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” she reflects. As her time at Hanover Central comes to a close, Leah feels a mix of gratitude and excitement. She’s thankful for the friendships she’s made and the memories she’s created, but she’s also eager to start on the next chapter of her life. Just like on the cross country course, she’s ready to move forward with confidence and freedom, running her own race—this time, without the spikes. Photo Credit: Nancy Novitski His Heart Photography
