Story by Filip Milenkovic The buzzer sounds, the clock hits zero, the players run off the field, and halftime begins. This means it is time to start the halftime entertainment. You may hear the band playing from as far as the concession stand, but there is one thing that your ears alone can not fully encapsulate. The Pom Cats take the field. Senior Avelina Arce has the stage for this article. She began the tale of her dance career by explaining how she was first introduced to the world of dance when she first enrolled in the mini dance camp that the Pom Cats host for all the young and aspiring dancers. Inevitably, she reached middle school and was met with her first real opportunity to become a Hanover Central Pom Cat. She was excited over this new opportunity, as she and her friends all wanted to be a part of the team. She continued to dance during the remainder of her middle school days. This led her to high school, where she made the decision to continue dancing even though her original group of friends came and went. Now it is Avelina’s senior season, and she is more ready than ever for the team to start their competition season. She remarked that after an unfortunate second place for the team this prior year, she hopes to bring home the state trophy this year. Avelina understands that for this to happen, she must embrace a leadership position on the team as a returning senior. She also added that they all must continue to sharpen their skills and strengthen their bonds as a team, in order to reach the top. However, Avelina’s plans do not stop this year with the pursuit of the state championship. She also plans to enter nursing after high school, and even attend a university. With an impressive 4.0 grade point average, she would like to attend Purdue University in Lafayette but is still in the midst of the college application process. She is unsure if she will continue her dancing career after high school but stated that if presented with the opportunity, she would take it. The buzzer sounds, the clock hits twelve, the players run onto the field, and halftime is over. The dancers may be off the field, but their season is far from over. Even once a senior’s season comes to a close, their lives are truly just beginning.
